On June 22, 2020, it was reported that Boots Riley was creating a new series with Michael Ellenberg of Media Res, starring Jharrel Jerome, called I'm a Virgo.[6] Riley started writing the show in 2019.[7] On December 14, 2020, it was reported that the half-hour series would be a co-production between Media Res and Amazon Studios.[2] Riley and Jerome will executive produce alongside Michael Ellenberg and Tze Chun.[2] The cast also includes Mike Epps, Carmen Ejogo, Brett Gray, Allius Barnes, Kara Young, and Olivia Washington.[7]

The series was filmed primarily in New Orleans, Louisiana.[3] The show utilizes practical effects with miniatures and puppets for some of the shots.[8]

The soundtrack will be provided by Riley's group The Coup, and Tune-Yards will provide the score.
